E Car Electric Car Club (E Car Club) officially launched its hire service at Elmsbrook, NW Bicester, the country’s largest true zero carbon housing scheme, on Thursday 7th July. The E Car Club was unveiled as part of a wider sustainable travel drop-in event held for new residents.
Hosted by lead developer A2Dominion, the event marked the launch of E Car’s brand new BMWi3 and Renault Zoe for immediate hire. Residents had the opportunity to register and claim their half price E Car lifetime membership and six free hours use, subsidised by A2Dominion, in a bid to tempt Elmsbrook residents to trial the Car Club. The vehicles, with a range of 70-90 miles are now available any time from £4.50 per hour including hire, power and insurance to residents in the wider town to access too.
BMW North Oxford also announced details of up to two-week free trial periods for Elmsbrook residents to drive around in a BMWi3 to put the vehicle through its paces. A2Dominion has set a target for 10% of residents to switch to electric by 2018 and, in support of this, is installing home charging units free of charge to households that make the switch within the first two years of moving in.
Louise Caves, A2Dominion Strategic Partnership Manager said:
“Travel accounts for some 32 per cent of a typical UK carbon footprint, with private car use alone accounting for 18 per cent of this. As lead developers of the UK’s first eco town, we’re committed to shaping a range of alternative, more sustainable travel options for our residents at Elmsbrook and this event marked the launch of those services now available”
Patrick Creswell, marketing manager from E-Car Club said:
“The E Car mission is to improve mobility whilst reducing the environmental and financial cost of every journey decision made, so this is a great initiative for the Elmsbrook community. We are keen to make a real difference to the way people travel and it was great to discuss E Car as a sustainable option with residents at the event. Six people have already signed up to the service so we’re confident this is going to really change people’s habits in how they get around.”
As well as E Car, The event marked the launch of the Elmsbrook Brompton Bike Loan Scheme. Providing free flexible bike hire, A2Dominion has purchased four Brompton folding bikes for residents to borrow for a week at a time.
“Brompton’s are a great way to get around town easily while providing added health benefits. We are passionate about getting people out on bikes and believe a free hire scheme will build appetite for this. Cycling is one of our planned alternative modes of travel to help minimise C02 emissions, and Brompton share our ethos in promoting sustainable transport choices to improve lifestyles. We’re looking forward to seeing the scheme underway in the Elmsbrook community.”
Georgia Lewis, business development manager at Brompton Bikes said:
“Having Brompton’s accessible to all is an easy and economical way to travel, so we’re pleased to be working with A2Dominion and providing these in such a pioneering sustainable community. The bikes fold down to a portable, practical size, and can be taken on buses or trains even at peak times, making it as simple as possible to get around to with no fuss. We hope the residents enjoy using them.”
A2Dominion has also partnered with Grayline Coaches to provide a direct bus service to the Town Centre every 30 minutes and serving Bicester Village Train Station at peak times. The service operating from 6.30am – 7.30pm Monday – Friday and 8am – 6pm on Saturdays from the Banbury Road bus stop has already proved popular with Elmsbrook residents and the Town alike.
“The event was a resounding success with our residents really engaged and keen to try out the Brompton Bikes, take away maps with Bicester cycle routes and learn how to operate the E Car Club. It’s another unique feature that sets Elmsbrook apart from other new build housing schemes.”
